The Bakken is a large shale play located in the Williston Basin, which stretches across portions of eastern Montana and western North Dakota. The Bakken is one of the company’s three key growth areas within its Lower 48 business unit, with a development area covering approximately 620,000 net acres at the end of 2018. The company’s activities focus on unconventional tight oil play development and production in the most prolific portion of the basin. Operational and capital efficiencies continue to improve in the basin through the use of multi-well pad drilling, completion optimization, facility design changes and data analytics. In 2018, net production from the Bakken averaged 84 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day.

If you are selected as the Health Safety & Environment (HSE) Specialist you will perform multiple and dynamic Health, Safety, Environmental & Regulatory (HSER) related activities as an individual contributor in partnership with our Operations, Maintenance, and Capital Projects stakeholders. The HSE Specialist is a coordinated member of the asset team and is essential to ensure a safe workplace for all stakeholders. This role is responsible for identifying barriers to outstanding HSE performance and working within a sphere of influence to address these barriers by focusing on innovation, progressing the human performance culture, and promoting a learning and continuous improvement mindset in the implementation of HSER programs and procedures. The HSE Specialist is a trusted advisor and interpreter for local leadership regarding HSE Management System compliance, reporting requirements, and accountability within the organization for incidents.
Your responsibilities may include:
Maintaining a working knowledge of the HSE Management System
Acting as a subject matter authority during field activities, ensuring compliance with procedures, LSR’s and OSHA, and promoting full implementation of programs
Coordinating with stakeholders to advanced Safety & Occupational Health (S&OH) performance across the asset and implement programs to succeed in complex conditions
Facilitating accurate and timely reporting of incidents and near misses including risk ranking of incidents
Initiating, participating and/or leading incident investigations and learning teams to ensure root cause determination, findings are well communicated, and corrective actions are built to prevent reoccurrence
Coordinating with operations to utilize tools to inform the workforce of emerging trends identified in leading and lagging indicators
Coordinating annual sample plan, and supporting calibration, collection and shipment of Industrial Hygiene samples per the Exposure Assessment Plan, and as needs arise
Serving as member for field emergency response protocols and ICS roles during the response to an emergency
Participating in planning HSE&R auditing, including external audits, guiding an internal BU or contractor audit, and/or acting as a subject matter authority for a Focused Audit
Supporting safety meetings by providing assistance, direction and resource materials as needed, to improve overall efficiency and impact
Able to conduct training on core HSE subjects including: LOTO, How Work, Confined Space, Excavations, Working at Heights, and other core HSE topics
Supporting PSSR field commissioning walkdowns with focus on process safety concerns
Coordinating the HAZCOM program including chemical approval and training processes
Partnering with environmental team to collect and inform on spill data for accurate reporting to agencies.
Supporting compliance of annual medical surveillance programs
Legally authorized to work in the United States
5 years of upstream HSE experience
5 years of experience with HSE Management Systems
Willing and able to travel 10% (with or without reasonable accommodations) on a yearly basis
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Safety or Environmental Sciences or related field or foreign equivalent
7 years of experience in the upstream energy industry
ASP, CSP, CIH or other certifications
Experience with PSM Facilities
Knowledge of incident tracking systems and experience utilizing it to track incidents and actions
Ability to network and gain partnership from members of other workgroups
