Alaska Overview

ConocoPhillips Alaska and its heritage companies have more than 50 years of business history in Alaska. As Alaska's largest oil and gas producer, the company produced an average 182 thousand barrels of oil and 9 million cubic feet of gas per day. ConocoPhillips, with about 1,100 Alaska employees, holds major ownership interests in the Prudhoe Bay Unit, the Kuparuk River Unit, and the Colville River Unit (Alpine). ConocoPhillips operates the Kuparuk and Alpine oil fields, has an ownership interest in the Trans Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) and owns/operates the Polar Tankers fleet.

Description:

The NSOD Kuparuk Lab Chemist position is an integral member of the ConocoPhillips Alaska Asset Integrity (AI) group. This position is located at Kuparuk and reports directly to the North Slope based Asset Integrity Superintendent. This position is responsible for providing North Slope Kuparuk Laboratory oversight and chemical analytical support.

Responsibilities may include :

  • Promoting safety and environmental programs

  • Laboratory Oversight

  • Prioritize analytical work flow

  • Conduct day-to-day laboratory analyses as required

  • Management of laboratory data

  • Maintenance and calibration of analytical instrumentation

  • Maintenance of laboratory procedures

  • Assure analytical quality control

  • Lab personnel training on instruments and lab procedures

  • Lab facility maintenance

  • Management of generated waste

  • Handle costs and budgeting for future needs

  • Provide safety leadership and ensuring that applicable laboratory and company HSE standards and regulations are adhered to

  • Effectively represent the Kuparuk Lab program, personnel, and results to internal and external clients

  • Chemical and Analytical Support

  • Actively participate in team efforts to handle chemical applications and field-wide efforts to reduce safety incidents

  • Engage in the corporate knowledge sharing effort as it applies to chemical and analytical issues

  • Serve as a field resource for chemical knowledge or to research chemicals-related issues

  • Understands organic and inorganic chemistry

  • Knowledge of analytical methods (ASTM, EPA, API, GPA, NACE, etc.) and instrumentation as they pertain to characterizing oilfield gas, liquid and solid samples

  • Understands safe and effective methods for collecting the above samples from process streams

  • Understands upstream oilfield chemical applications for addressing scale, emulsion, corrosion, foaming, heat transfer fluid and microbiological problems

  • Knowledge of chemical hazards

  • Builds positive relationships based on trust and seeks collaboration across organizational boundaries to achieve goals

  • Invites dialogue to gain a shared understanding and influences with confidence to drive performance and achieve business results

Qualifications:

Basic/Required:

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States

  • B.A or B.S. degree in Chemistry or related field

  • Minimum of three years of relevant chemistry laboratory experience in the oil & gas industry

  • Valid Driver's License

Preferred:

  • Basic knowledge of upstream oil and gas processing facilities

  • North Slope or arctic experience

  • Strong knowledge of organic and inorganic chemistry

  • Strong knowledge of analytical methods (ASTM, EPA, API, GPA, NACE, etc.) and instrumentation as they pertain to characterizing oilfield gas, liquid and solid samples

  • Deep understanding of safe and effective methods for collecting the above samples from process streams

  • Deep understanding of upstream oilfield chemical applications for addressing scale, emulsion, corrosion, foaming, heat transfer fluid and microbiological problems

  • Strong knowledge of chemical hazards

  • Possess the necessary interpersonal skills to effectively relate to diverse workgroups in remote locations

  • Possess the strong organizational skills necessary to accomplish a high level of multi-tasking

  • Willing and able to maintain flexibility and easily adjust to changes in work scope and/or timing

  • Highly goal oriented, self-motivated, and able to proceed on assigned tasks with minimal supervision

  • Computer-literate and proficient with Windows based programs as it pertains to laboratory operations

  • Willing and able to align personal program goals with the combined overall A&OI goals

  • Delivers results through realistic planning to accomplish goals
