Alaska Overview

ConocoPhillips Alaska and its heritage companies have more than 50 years of business history in Alaska. As Alaska's largest oil and gas producer, the company produced an average 182 thousand barrels of oil and 9 million cubic feet of gas per day. ConocoPhillips, with about 1,100 Alaska employees, holds major ownership interests in the Prudhoe Bay Unit, the Kuparuk River Unit, and the Colville River Unit (Alpine). ConocoPhillips operates the Kuparuk and Alpine oil fields, has an ownership interest in the Trans Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) and owns/operates the Polar Tankers fleet.


ConocoPhillips Alaska is currently looking for two (2) Drilling Supervisors reporting to the Alaska Drilling Superintendent. This position will be responsible for providing onsite supervision of drilling and completion operations on exploratory and/or development wells for ConocoPhillips within the state of Alaska. This position will safely and efficiently manage rig site operations and personnel to deliver the business objectives. This position will also act as the ConocoPhillips safety leader for the wellsite location and operations.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Lead all operations in a manner that ensures the health and safety of all personnel and the protection of the environment

  • Act as the safety leader for the wellsite and define the HSE tone and expectations for the location to ensure onsite participation and implementation of all safety policies and programs

  • Ensure operations comply with all statutory, policy and program requirements. Ensure all regulatory approvals are in place prior to any operation

  • Maintain proper well control certification and be capable of managing well control situations

  • Manage rig site operations to deliver program objectives

  • Identify/assess HSE and operational risks and develop contingency plans to mitigate same

  • Maintain timely communications with Drilling Engineer and/or Completion Engineer and Superintendent to continuously improve well planning and execution

  • Investigate, follow up and close out all incidents relating to rig site personnel, equipment and procedures

  • Monitor, evaluate and regularly report on overall performance against program, and performance of the services and equipment involved in the operation

  • Ensure all daily Wellview reports are submitted on time and information is complete and accurate

  • Coordinate, supervise, and critique service company activities

  • Review and recommend optimization of drilling program/procedures

  • Assist in preparation of drilling documentation/manuals

  • Participation in emergency preparedness and permitting activities

  • Work with Supply Chain Management (Material and Logistics) group as required

  • Provide office based operational support as required

  • Serve as mentor to less experienced Drilling Supervisors



  • Legally authorized to work in the United States

  • 5 years of field drilling experience

  • 5 years of experience in supervising multi-disciplined rig teams

  • Intermediate proficiency with HSE leadership and communication skills

  • Intermediate level of knowledge in all aspects of drilling, complex workover and completion techniques


  • Experience with subsidence repair during rig workover operations

  • Good Computer skills and proficient in Microsoft Office and Wellview

  • Experience in cold weather or arctic environments

  • Experience with MPD (Managed Pressure Drilling)

  • Takes ownership of actions and follows through on commitments by holding others accountable and standing up for what's right

  • Listens actively and invites dialogue for shared understanding, then influences and acts to drive performance and achieve results

  • Delivers results through realistic planning to accomplish goals
