Position Summary

The primary function of a Regulatory Specialist Summer intern is to provide supervised direct regulatory support for an operational location and its development teams. These activities may include regulatory review and interpretation, preparation of reports, applications for regulatory approvals and development of programs, plans and proposals. Specific positions may specialize in one or more functional areas to include resource impacts analysis, wellbore permitting, production measurement and accounting, and research.

You will receive diversified training through on-the-job assignments using the technical skills you have acquired in college. The work will develop you technically and professionally, and will involve personal interaction with both professional and technical employees. The overall knowledge you will gain during your internship and your daily liaison with the operational and headquarters’ staff groups will provide you with an excellent opportunity to develop and focus on continuous learning and growth.

Depending on your assignment, your responsibilities may involve some travel. Individuals must be willing to travel. At the end of your assignment, you will be expected to present to senior leaders within the HSE organization on the projects that you have worked on and the development you have achieved during your assignment with ConocoPhillips.

Assignments will typically be at the business unit headquarters in Houston, TX, or at various field office locations in the Lower 48. Typical length of our internships varies from 10 to 14 weeks based on the project and your availability.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Evaluation of natural resource impacts for proposed projects.

  • Evaluation of new projects for technical compliance with specific subsurface and surface regulatory requirements.

  • Evaluation of existing facilities for compliance with various surface use, production and reporting requirements associated with oil and gas operations in local, state and federal jurisdictions.

  • Completion of technical documentation, consultation with agencies/contractors, and training and support for operations/field personnel in regulatory/policy compliance.

  • Review and interpretation of oil and gas regulatory requirements as they apply to current and future operations.

  • Development and production of plans, programs, and procedures guiding regulatory compliance.

  • Preparation and submission of internal and external reports and related documentation, including formal presentations to small and large groups.

  • Identification and qualification of outside resources and services.

  • Interfacing and coordination of information between internal and external entities, with varying perspectives and interests.

  • Lead or participate in field audits and surveys to assess compliance with regulatory requirements and project specific conditions of approval.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States as a U.S. citizen or national, or an alien admitted as permanent resident, refugee or asylee and will not need sponsorship now or in the future

  • Pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Natural Resource Management, Environmental Policy, Civil or Environmental Engineering or related technical fields or foreign equivalent

  • A minimum of ten (10) continuous weeks’ availability for internship

  • Current level in college: Sophomore through Graduate Student

  • Expected graduation date: Fall 2020 or later


  • A minimum cumulative and major GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale

  • Previous internships or co-op's in an energy related field

  • Proficient in Microsoft office products

  • Ability to generate effective solutions based on available information and makes timely decisions that are safe and ethical

  • Develops strong relationships based on trust and seeks opportunities to collaborate across the matrix/organizational boundaries to achieve business goals
