Reporting to the Manager of the Infrastructure & Operations Group - The Global IT Director for Server, Storage, and Data Center Operations provides technology vision, strategy and leadership in the development and implementation of Information Technology (IT) infrastructure, systems and services with a keen focus on delivering robust, cost-efficient, and timely solutions to satisfy business needs. Responsible for developing, directing and improving IT operations and staff, lead a core functional team of IT professionals to deliver on “run-the-business” operations and projects, while monitoring performance and personal development within a defined budget.

Scope: Direct management of the budgets, systems and employees for the following environments supporting ConocoPhillips IT Corporate Infrastructure. Additionally, provides indirect oversight, and global direction and stewardship of the systems in the global business units. Holds global responsibility for the following solution areas:

  • Server Operations – Includes Windows Systems, UNIX Systems, Linux Systems, Virtual Systems, and various appliance-based computing platforms in support of corporate IT and the business units. Maintains reliable, secure, compliant and performance computing systems

  • Storage Operations – Includes primary storage systems, recovery storage systems, structured and unstructured data systems in support of corporate IT and the business units

  • Data Center Operations – Primarily focused on ConocoPhillips two major data centers in North America. Additionally, providing standards and mentorship for the business units (BU) data centers globally

  • Disaster and Operational Recovery Operations – Providing the systems and oversight of the operational and disaster recovery capabilities for applications, databases, and unstructured field systems user data. This includes server backup and recovery, user data backup and recovery, as well as disaster recovery for key systems to support business continuity

  • Data Center Automation – Leading a team of technologists building automated workflows and orchestrations to achieve more compliant environments, “click for service” capabilities, reporting metrics and trending of infrastructure capacities and resources

  • Cloud Infrastructure Systems Operations – Includes operational responsibility for Cloud computing service for the business. Includes migrations in support of VCIP goals, and direct operations of workloads in public clouds such as Amazon AWS and Azure. Maintains reliable, secure, complaint and performance systems for public cloud deployments

  • High Performance Computing – Managing the embedded Operations team that support our Geosciences organization. This entails the operations and management of our 5900 servers and 65 PB cluster for seismic and reservoir interpretation and modeling

  • Technical Computing – Supports the end user community that utilizes our blade workstation infrastructure solution. This is a full suite embedded team that works day in and day out with the interpretation and Reservoir Engineering teams

  • Organizational Head Count: 77 Direct 12-14 Indirect and fractional BU staff

  • Historical corporate only Capital Budget Range: $18MM - $25MM

  • Historical corporate only Operating Budget Range: $40MM - $45MM

Responsibilities may include:

Plan for the Future :

  • Understand customer requirements so performance, capacity, and capabilities are established to support business plans while maintaining cost-effectiveness

  • Leverage cloud technology appropriately to drive agility, affordability, and quality

  • Drive continuous improvement

“Run-the-Business” :

  • Measure, monitor, and manage performance to service level agreements and overall quality delivery for the respective teams

  • Implement best practices to optimize performance

  • Resolve pervasive issues at the enterprise level with a clear ROI/TCO financial focus

  • Serve as a point of escalation to staff when issues arise

Delivery Management :

  • Lead, guide and develop business cases with clear ROI/TVO

  • Review and approve business and/or technical requirements

  • Defines scope or projects and work schedules

  • Manage departmental resources to complete projects on time, within scope, and on budget

  • Serve as a point of escalation to leadership when project issues arise

Resource and Performance Management :

  • Maintain proper staffing levels

  • Allocate resources and provide ongoing two-way feedback

  • Develop and execute staff development plans and evaluate individual performance

  • Conducts personnel actions such as promotions, transfers, and other status changes

  • Develop appropriate financial and cost control models to systematically reduce the IT budget run rates

Expense Planning, Management and Control :

  • Partner with business and executive leadership/management with planning and capital and operational budget in accordance with IT strategic plans and run-the-business needs

  • Develop metrics-based performance, operational, and executive dashboards to provide visibility, transparency, and clarity on IT operations and efficiency

Technical and Process Standards :

  • Drive, design and implement technical standards and process standards focus on operations

  • Work with management to finalize standards to ensure long-term sustainability, strategic alignment, and cost-effectiveness of proposed enterprise and departmental standards

  • Promote consistent adoption of new technical and process standards within IT



  • Legally authorized to work in the United States

  • 10 years of experience planning and coordinating multiple IT operations groups serving different and varied business unit needs

  • 10 years of experience in internal consulting and customer account management (i.e. defining engagement scope, negotiating commitments, estimating costs and maintaining service level agreements)

  • 7 years of experience delivering on enterprise level initiatives in large companies; familiar with a variety of information security back-end, middleware and endpoint tools

  • 7 years of experience leading a team and managing resource and staffing requirements

  • Broad-based knowledge of information technology

  • Intermediate knowledge of enterprise architecture principles


  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Information Technology, Computer Science, Management Information System, Business or related field or foreign equivalent

  • Excellent communicator with strong customer focus who can work with business sponsors and technologists to articulate business requirements and technology options

  • Proficient at estimating resource requirements and identifying staffing gaps

  • Demonstrates ability to provide leadership excellence and guide business partners in meeting their day-to-day requirements

  • Demonstrates ability to sustain strong ongoing relationships with client middle and senior management

  • Takes ownership of actions and follows through on dedications by courageously dealing with important problems, holding others accountable, and standing up for what is right

  • Delivers results through realistic planning to accomplish goals

  • Generates effective solutions based on available information and makes timely decisions that are safe and ethical
